The Veronicas’ trip down memory lane
Our fave twins rockers are home, sweet home and in the mood to fess up to all their first times… Get the goss!
When was the first you…
Sang together?
Jess: We sang ‘Doh Ray Me’ when we were about four and were both wearing red leotards. I picked my nose through the whole song and Lisa forgot the dance. It was just us skipping around in a circle pretty much, and then she forgot the steps. It was quite funny, but yeah…
Wanted to be rock stars?
Lisa: Always, well, it’s not so much that we wanted to be rock stars, but that we never wanted to stop singing.
Jess: We decided from the age of four and through school and stuff that nothing else interested us, there was nothing else we saw as a career path.
Lisa: As we got older we realised just how much we loved music and that we wanted to do it always.
Had a punch-up?
Lisa: It was probably when we were really young and got our cat, Shenny. She used to go out of her box and we used to keep putting the cat back in there. We would sit there for hours doing it – that cat hated us and we used to fight over it.
Jess: I remember when we were toddlers in the bath together and I smacked Lisa in the head. It was pretty funny.
CD you were obsessed with?
Together: It was Michael Jackson!
Got a pet?
Jess: It was Shenny, our cat. She was just feral, she used to attack us all the time. Probably because of how much we tormented the poor thing.
Lisa: She would hide around the corner and if you walked past, she would growl and run out at you.
Jess: Yeah, she bit our brother’s bum!
Lisa: She just got really nasty! Shenny was hiding in the kitchen one day and our brother walked past and she came running out and grabbed onto his bum and wouldn’t let go!
Jess: Yeah, she was a psycho cat. I really hated that cat.
Kissed a boy?
Jess: Mine was in year Seven.
Lisa: Mine was really late, I didn’t have mine until year Nine.
Jess: My first kiss was really funny because it was with a boy who had braces and I didn’t want to kiss him and we were at a party and all my friends shoved us in a room and I was thinking “oh no, I don’t want to kiss him!”. Anyway, he ended up coming up to me and just grabbing me and putting his whole mouth onto my whole mouth. He cut me with his braces and I was so not happy. I went, “ouch!” and I then I went, “ahhh!”.
Lisa: Mine was my neighbour and he tried to convince me to go out with him and I was like, “no” and then an hour later he asked me out again and I was like, “oh, alright”. We went down to the creek and were holding hands and then he just grabbed me and kissed me. I had this big pimple which I had put all this make-up on and he kissed me so full-on that he ripped off all the make-up so my big pimple was showing! I was like, “yuck!” and hid for the rest of the day!
Jess: She hid for five hours and then went and dumped him.
Had a paid job?
Lisa: It was singing when we were with this theatre company for nine years. In the school holidays we used to do musicals and stuff and get paid.
Jess: We did work at General Pants a few years ago, but we used to get paid to do festivals and corporate gigs too.
Went to a live show?
Lisa: It would definitely have been Jesus Christ Superstar.
Jess: It was the best, with Jon Stephens and John Farnham. It changed our lives.
Dyed your hair?
Lisa: Probably when we were about 13 or 14- we were kind of bored.
Jess: You weren’t really allowed to dye your hair at school so we told them we had to dye our hair red for a festival we had to perform at.
Lisa: Mum used to dye our hair for us all the time. It was great.
Jess: She’d do experiments so we’d have red hair, pink hair and I had a bit of blonde in my hair once. She was so cool!
Got a tattoo?
Jess: Mine was ‘Love’ on my wrist. That was about a year and a half ago.
Lisa: Mine was when I got our initials on the back of my neck and three little stars. That was a few months ago.
Jess: But since then we’ve gone all out. We’re gone, we can’t stop!
Lisa: After I broke up with Ryan (Cabrera), I got one that says ‘Fate’ on my wrist, and me and Jess got little ones on our hips too.
Jess: I like tattoos. I just had to find the right one to get a big one of. I woke up one day and went, “I want a big one on my calf”. I saw a picture of a girl with one on her leg and then wanted one on my leg. I’m really into ‘50s pin-up girls and thought one of those was the right one.
Lisa: And one of our friends who doesn’t really know what it is, rang up everyone and said, “Jess got a tattoo of Lisa on her leg!”
Got homesick?
Jess: I was pretty homesick when we knew we were going to be in America for a really long time. We didn’t know when we were coming back because at that point no-one really knew.
Lisa: I don’t really get homesick, much. I’m okay with it. I’m having lot of fun.
Jess: Yeah, well I have a lot of fun too, but you know, a few years ago, when we were in the States, I sort of thought, “I miss my friends and my boyfriend and everyone” but It’ss all good now.
Heard your song on the radio?
Lisa: It was when we’d just landed back in Australia and we turned on the radio and a girl said “I want to request ‘Forever’ by the Veronicas” and we were like, “no way!” And when they played it we were like, “wow! That’s so crazy !”
Your heart was broken?
Lisa: Well, just recently was the first time my heart was broken – with Ryan.
Jess: I loved this boy, when I was really young, and I loved him for eight years. He never wanted to go out with me and I loved him for ever so I had a broken heart for eight years!
