| en farfouillant sur le net je suis tombé sur un article les concerant Double trouble By smh.com.au August 18, 2005The twin girls from Brisbane poised to take on the US pop scene, the Veronicas, are in trouble with Archie.
Archie Comic Publications, publishers of the comic books that revolved around a high-school gang, have sued Warner Music Group to stop the act from using "Veronica" in their name.
In the comics, which were popular in the 1960s, Veronica Lodge was the raven-haired rich girl who made Archie weak at the knees - and always got what she wanted.
The lawsuit, which was filed in New York, alleges trademark infringement.
It comes as Warner is about to launch the Veronicas on the US market.
Their debut single, 4Ever, is scheduled to be released this week, with their full-length album, The Secret Life of the Veronicas, to follow in October.
In an interview with Christine Sams in The Sun-Herald last month, 20-year-old Jess and Lisa Origliasso credited their favorite comic-book character with being the inspiration for the band's moniker.
"It was actually inspired by the Archie comics, because Veronica's basically the dark-haired rich bitch who spends all her days and money on shopping. She gets her own way. It was inspired by that, because we like her. I mean we're kind of taking the piss out of it, in a way, but we do tend to have bad shopping habits and all the rest of it."
Warner Music Group does not comment on pending litigation, a spokesman said.
The suit comes as Archie Comics plans to relaunch the Archies pop group, and to produce a film, featuring Veronica.
In 1969, the Archies became the first cartoons to top the US charts with the quintessential bubblegum confection Sugar, Sugar. Now there are plans to relaunch the group with human musicians.
Miramax announced plans in 2003 for a Betty & Veronica movie, although the project's current status is unclear.
In any case, Archie Comics is convinced that a band traipsing the globe under the name of the Veronicas will "damag[e] the Veronica character's image to her legion of fans".
The twins, who describe their sound as "a cross between Avril Lavigne and the No Doubt kind of vibe", scored a deal believed to be worth at least $2 million with Warner Music in the US last year - a record for unknown artists overseas. | |
